Make Your Facility More Accessible

In 2014 The Steadward Centre with funds from the Human Rights Education and Multiculturalism Fund performed an audit of 25 fitness facilities in the greater Edmonton region. Using the AIMFREE tool, our goal was to a) identify current physical barriers to accessing community fitness centres for people experiencing disability in the Edmonton region, b) reduce the amount of accessibility barriers found in each of the 25 fitness centres, and c) educate fitness professionals and facility managers, supervisors and management about barriers specific to their community fitness and recreation centres.

We wholeheartedly thank our audit team, HREMF and, the 25 fitness facilities who participated in this audit. Their willingness to learn, work together to make changes, build awareness and community will continue to facilitate positive change.

On this page is the complete report, a summary of the Edmonton AIMFREE audit, plus a downloadable infographic (please share!) and resources to help you on your way to making an inclusive, accessible fitness / recreation facility. The Steadward Centre is available for training, consultation and AIMFREE audits are available for your facility.
